Ask whether they carry liability insurance, what happens if a section goes out mid-season, whether takedown and storage are included, whose lights are being used, and whether you'll get a written quote with everything listed.
How to Choose a Christmas Light Installer
Hiring someone to hang your Christmas lights? Here's what to ask about insurance, repairs, takedown and storage, and what a good written quote should include.
Questions to ask before you hire
1. Are you insured?
Installers work on ladders and roofs at your home. Ask for a certificate of insurance and make sure it's current.
2. What happens if lights go out?
Ask how mid-season repairs work, how quickly they respond, and whether repair visits cost extra. For permanent lights, ask what the warranty covers, for how long, and whether it covers labor as well as parts.
3. Are takedown and storage included?
Ask when takedown happens, whether it's in the price, and where the lights are stored until next season.
4. Whose lights are they?
Some companies lease lights each season; others sell them to you. Ask who owns them and what grade of lights you're getting.
5. How do you attach them?
Ask how lights attach to gutters and shingles. Clips made for the job avoid nails or staples in your roof.
6. Can I get a written quote?
A good quote lists the rooflines, trees and displays being lit, the lights used, timers, takedown, and the total price, with no surprises later.
Red flags
- A price over the phone with no measurements or photos of your home
- No written quote, or one that leaves out takedown
- Can't or won't show proof of insurance
- Nails or staples in your shingles
Ask us the same questions. You'll get the answers in writing with your quote, and the final price is confirmed on-site before anything goes up.
Thinking about skipping the yearly install?
Permanent lights stay up all year and light the roofline for every holiday. See permanent vs. traditional Christmas lights.

It varies by company. Some include takedown in the price; others charge extra for it. Ask, and get it in writing along with the takedown timing.
It depends on the company and the plan. Some installers lease lights season to season; others sell them to you. Ask who owns the lights, and where they're stored after the season.
Early. October and November are the busiest months, and install dates fill up quickly.
